Trump Imposes Tariffs on Canada Over Controversial Ad

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced a 10% tariff increase on Canada on Saturday, attributing the decision to a “fraudulent” advertisement that aired during the World Series, which featured a speech by former President Ronald Reagan.

He stated that “legal options” were being reviewed in response to the incident.

According to Trump, “Canada was caught, red handed, putting up a fraudulent advertisement on Ronald Reagan’s Speech on Tariffs.”

He cited a statement from the Reagan Foundation, which explained that they had “created an ad campaign using selective audio and video of President Ronald Reagan.

The ad misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address,” and that they “did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks.”

Trump claimed the advertisement was part of Ottawa’s broader strategy to manipulate public opinion and seek intervention from the US Supreme Court on tariffs that Canada has historically imposed, which he argued have been harmful to Washington.

He emphasized that the US is now in a stronger position to defend itself against “high and overbearing Canadian Tariffs,” as well as tariffs from other countries.

Further, Trump pointed out that “Ronald Reagan LOVED Tariffs for purposes of National Security and the Economy,” in contrast to Canada’s portrayal of Reagan as opposing them.

He also criticized Ottawa for allowing the ad to air, despite being aware of its fraudulent nature.

He noted that the advertisement was supposed to be pulled immediately but was allowed to run “last night” during the World Series, calling it a “serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act.”
